Lions signing veteran lineman Mike Daniels, released by Packers, to one-year deal

The Detroit Lions have spent the past year building one of the best defensive lines in football, and they're not done yet.
The Lions agreed to a one-year deal Friday with free-agent defensive tackle Mike Daniels, who was released earlier this week by the Green Bay Packers.
The deal is worth up to $9.1 million, with $7.8 million guaranteed.
Daniels missed six games last season with a foot injury and tied his career-low with two sacks, but the 30-year-old was one of the best interior linemen in the NFL at the height of his career, making the Pro Bowl in 2017.
The Lions released veteran running back Theo Riddick on Saturday to make room for Daniels.
Daniels adds depth and experience to an already deep defensive line.
The Lions signed defensive end Trey Flowers as a free agent this spring, added nose tackle Damon Harrison in a trade with the New York Giants last fall and return Da'Shawn Hand, A'Shawn Robinson and Romeo Okwara from a team that ranked 10th against the run last season.
Harrison is currently on the non-football injury list after skipping offseason workouts in a contract dispute, and Robinson has missed the first two days of camp for personal reasons.
The Lions struggled up front early last season, but blossomed after acquiring Harrison for a fifth-round pick.
This fall, they should be even stronger with a year of seasoning in coach Matt Patricia's defense and more depth at every position on the line.
"I’m always optimistic," defensive coordinator Paul Pasqualoni said earlier this week when asked how good his defensive line can be. "For me, it’s exciting to have the guys we have up front. So I’m not going to make any predictions, but our goal is to be as fundamentally-sound, as technique-aware and good as we can possibly be and hopefully make a bunch of tackles with the defensive line. That’ll make the coaches very, very happy, and I think the fans will be very happy, too."
Daniels played seven seasons for the Packers and and helped the team win four NFC North championships. He had missed just four games in his career before last season, had five straight years with four or more sacks, and was released in part because of a $10.7 million cap number.
The Lions entered Friday with nearly $23 million in cap space, according to NFLPA records.

A.J. Green headed for MRI after ankle injury but team is reportedly hopeful about outlook

Image result for a.j. green
Every year in training camp, there are always injuries that have a large effect on the season to come. Sometimes, those injuries even happen to stars. If the initial report is to be believed, Cincinnati Bengals star A.J. Green may have narrowly avoided such an injury.
Green came up limping after a 7-on-7 play early in Bengals camp and had to be helped to the sideline. Per reporters on the scene, Green was incredibly frustrated, throwing his mouthpiece at the ground and even punching the bench on the sideline multiple times. He was eventually carted off the field without a shoe on his left foot.
Green is the Bengals' best offensive player and the heart of their passing game. His having to miss any team during the regular season would be disastrous for the team, even with quality depth like Tyler BoydTyler Eifert, and C.J. Uzomah to pick up the slack in the passing game.
Green is headed into the final year of his contract at age 31, and there has been speculation that the Bengals might look to trade him to kickstart a rebuild. That option is obviously taken off the table if the injury is serious; but more important, one of the game's best players would be sidelined and miss games for the third time in four years.
Green was limited to just nine games last season due to a toe injury, and 10 games in 2016 due to a hamstring tear. (It's worth noting this injury appears to be the opposite foot from the one that had the injured toe last year.) He had made the Pro Bowl in each of his first seven seasons in the league before missing it last season.
If and when more information comes out regarding Green's status, this post will be updated. Until then, we're hoping for the best version of the news.

The un-Departed: Leonardo DiCaprio’s gal pal Camila Morrone claps back at social media trolls

The un-Departed: Leonardo DiCaprio’s gal pal Camila Morrone claps back at social media trolls
What’s eating Camila Morrone?
Leonardo DiCaprio’s 22-year-old girlfriend, fed up from wisecracks about the 22-year age difference between herself and the Hollywood hunk, snapped back at her detractors on social media late last week.
“I just read some of my comments on my Instagram and . . . my god, people are so mean and full of anger with people that they know nothing about,” she wrote. “I guess I just hope . . . people learn to live with a little less hatred and place their time and interests elsewhere, because living without hatred feels pretty good.”
The Argentine-born model and actress, who appeared in the 2018 Eli Roth adaptation of “Death Wish” and snagged the cover of Vogue Turkey three years ago, quietly has been dating DiCaprio for over a year.
Her mother, Lucila Sola, had previously been the longtime partner of Al Pacino, whom Morrone refers to as her stepdad.
On Thursday, Morrone posted a photo on Instagram of silver-screen stars Lauren Bacall and Humphrey Bogart, with the caption, “A love like this.”
Many people assumed that Morrone was comparing her relationship to Leo with with the Hollywood legends who famously had a 25-year age difference.
“Yeah, that’s her icon because Lauren liked her men 25 years older, famous and ultra rich just like Camila likes her Leonardo,” sniped social media user @scottsee.

Another defamer hinted that “The Revenant” star would break up with Morrone once her youthful looks began fading.
“You only have a couple more years before he dumps you girl!” scoffed @vegancow.
In May, the lovebirds attended the Cannes Film Festival premiere of “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” despite not arriving together, according toUSA Today.

UFC 240 results, highlights: Cris Cyborg batters Felicia Spencer en route to decision victory

After taking her first loss in 15 years, the former UFC featherweight champion got back to her winning ways with a hard fought win over Felicia Spencer in the co-main event of UFC 240 in Edmonton on Saturday night. Cyborg dropped heavy punches and kicks on the relative unknown 145-pound challenger, but was never able to completely turn the lights out on her opponent.
"I trained really hard. Thanks to Felicia for giving me my first cut. I'm happy. I just want to come back and do my job. Thank you, God. I feel very blessed to be here," Cyborg said after the fight. "The sport is growing and better girls keep showing up. I'm really happy because when I started MMA, there weren't any girls. Seeing girls in the cage makes me proud."
Despite suffering a massive cut on her forehead in Round 1 thanks to a nice elbow from Spencer, Cyborg rallied to land multiple four and five-punch combinations on the former Invicta FC champion throughout the 15-minute fight. Even with Spencer, a submission specialist, working hard in the clinch against the cage, Cyborg was able to prevent a single takedown from being secured.
When Spencer tried to pull guard in Round 2, Cyborg stayed on her feet and landed huge punches from her standing guard position.
In the end, Cyborg was just too much for her opponent. When asked after the fight by Joe Rogan what would be next, Cyborg didn't really provide much other than she wants another shot at double champion Amanda Nunes, who handed Cyborg that first defeat in 15 years back in December. But it will be up to UFC and Cyborg's management team to make it happen with Cyborg fighting out her contract on Saturday night.
"I'm going to let UFC talk to my manager, but I just wanted to get this victory. For sure, I want Amanda. I want a rematch."
Nunes herself chimed in immediately after the fight.

Gervonta Davis vs. Ricardo Nunez fight results: 'Tank' overpowers opponent for destructive TKO win

If Gervonta Davis really is the next big thing in boxing, Saturday's homecoming did nothing to dissuade the theory.
Davis (22-0, 21 KOs), the WBA junior lightweight champion, made a spectacular return to his home city by finishing hard-hitting Ricardo Nunez via second-round TKO to set off a wild celebration inside Royal Farms Arena.
The victory marked the first time a native of the Charm City had returned to Baltimore to defend a world title since featherweight champion Harry Jeffra defeated Spider Armstrong in 1940. The explosive crowd's response inside the 12,000-seat arena might have also convinced promoters to bring more fights to Baltimore.
The southpaw Davis was patient early as the ultra-confident Nunez (21-3, 19 KOs) stalked forward and cut off the ring. But Davis made him pay once he was able to control the real estate between them and rocked Nunez with a sweeping left hand that snapped his head back.
With the ropes holding Nunez up, Davis continued to unload and landed another flush left hand that forced referee Harvey Dock to jump in at 1:33 of Round 2 without a count to prevent further punishment.

Vissel Kobe 0-2 Barcelona: Report, Ratings & Reaction as Carles Perez Shines to Lift Rakuten Cup

FBL-JPN-ESP-BARCELONA-VISSEL
Barcelona secured a 2-0 win against Vissel Kobe on Saturday to lift the Rakuten Cup in their last pre-season match in Japan.

Three former Barcelona players were in action for Vissel Kobe and it was Andrés Iniesta who came closest to breaking the deadlock when a long-range effort flew past Marc-André ter Stegen's far post, while Riqui Puig wasted a golden chance for the visitors at the other end of the pitch.

Iniesta came close once again in the latter stages of the first half, while goalkeeper Daiya Maekawa was forced into a good save to deny Ivan Rakitić a late goal, but in the end, an overall lethargic first-half came to a close with both sides still on level terms.
Substitute Ousmane Dembélé offered an exciting spark to Barcelona's attack in the second half and it looked like the Frenchman could provide the difference, but it was actually academy graduate Carles Pérez who opened the scoring after some neat link-up play with Malcom.

Carles Aleñá could have put the game to bed but tried to be too cute with his dinked effort and it was easily clawed away by Maekawa, while Malcom wasn't cute enough when he went for power over placement only to be denied by the crossbar.

Pérez then scored his second of the game with just a few minutes left on the clock, firing the ball in off the post from an acute angle to wrap up the win and secure the Rakuten Cup against Vissel Kobe

Trump sparks outrage with derogatory tweets about Rep. Elijah Cummings

In a series of tweets on Saturday morning, President Trump slammed Rep. Elijah Cummings for his criticism of treatment of migrants at the southern border,  claiming that Cummings' congressional district was one of the "worst run and most dangerous anywhere in the United States."
"Rep, Elijah Cummings has been a brutal bully, shouting and screaming at the great men & women of Border Patrol about conditions at the Southern Border, when actually his Baltimore district is FAR WORSE and more dangerous. His district is considered the Worst in the USA," Mr. Trump said in the first of several tweets.
"As proven last week during a Congressional tour, the Border is clean, efficient & well run, just very crowded. Cumming District is a disgusting, rat and rodent infested mess. If he spent more time in Baltimore, maybe he could help clean up this very dangerous & filthy place," Mr. Trump continued. He threatened to investigate the federal funds sent to Cummings' district, and said that "no human being would want to live there."
Mr. Trump doubled down hours later, writing "Elijah Cummings spends all of his time trying to hurt innocent people through "Oversight." He does NOTHING for his very poor, very dangerous and very badly run district!" He included a video from Terrance K. Williams, a black conservative comedian.
While Cummings' district encompasses some of Baltimore, it also includes some of the wealthier areas in Maryland. His district has an above-average median income compared to the rest of the U.S. His district is also over 50% black, according to Census data. However, Baltimore has struggled with crime in recent years. In 2017, Baltimore had the highest homicide rate among the country's 50 largest cities.
Mr. Trump's tweets quickly stirred outrage online, with many questioning why he would assume the black representative would preside over a squalid district. It is unclear what specifically triggered the attacks on the chairman of the powerful House Oversight and Reform Committee. However, Matthew Gertz of Media Mattersreported that a segment criticizing Cummings and his district aired earlier Saturday morning on "Fox & Friends," one of Mr. Trump's preferred cable news shows.
In a segment which quickly went viral, CNN host Victor Blackwell, a native of Baltimore, noted that Mr. Trump often invokes infestation when referring to minority lawmakers, such as when he tweeted that four progressive congresswomen should "go back" to the "crime infested places from which they came."
"The president says about Congressman Cummings' district that no human would want to live there. You know who did, Mr. President? I did," Blackwell said, choking up with emotion. "There are challenges, no doubt. But people are proud of their community."
"I don't want to sound self-righteous, but people get up and go to work there, they care for their families there, they love their children who pledge allegiance to the flag just like people who live in districts of congressmen who support you, sir. They are Americans too," Blackwell said.
In a statement, Baltimore Mayor Bernard C. "Jack" Young said it was "unacceptable for the political leader of our country to denigrate a vibrant American City like Baltimore, and to viciously attack U.S. Representative Elijah Cummings a patriot and a hero."
Cummings responded to Mr. Trump on Twitter in a series of tweets, saying that "Each morning, I wake up, and I go and fight for my neighbors." Cummings added that he held a hearing on skyrocketing drug prices this week.
"Mr. President, we can address this together. Two years ago, I went to the White House to ask you to endorse my bill to let the government negotiate directly for lower drug prices," Cummings wrote. "You told me then that you supported the legislation and that you would work with me to make it happen. I took you at your word," he said in his final tweet, linking to a 2017 letter by House Democrats expressing disappointment that Mr. Trump did not work with them on lowering prescription drug prices.
In a statement to CBS News, Cummings said he "will not be distracted" by Mr. Trump's tweets.
"My tweets are all I have to say. I will not be distracted from doing everything I can to uplift the lives of the people in Baltimore, the nation, and the world. That is and will be my sole mission until the day I die," Cummings said.
Cummings has been a vocal critic of treatment of migrants at detention facilities at the border. His committee held a hearing on these facilities earlier this month. In his opening statement at that hearing, Cummings noted the reports of squalid conditions for detained migrant children, and urged committee members to ask themselves, "Would you allow this for your own child?"
His committee also authorized subpoenas for personal emails and texts used for official business by top White House advisers, including Mr. Trump's daughter and son-in-law, Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner.

Impeachment Would Probably Cost Democrats the House

To succeed, it would require at least 13 votes from Democrats representing districts Trump carried in 2016.
The New York Times reports that House Judiciary Committee chairmanJerrold Nadler has “gradually become convinced that his panel should proceed with impeachment hearings and do so as expeditiously as possible, though he has not stated so publicly,” citing “lawmakers and aides familiar with his thinking.”
Nadler should not be surprised that he’s encountering so much resistance to this idea from House speaker Nancy Pelosi. A great deal has been written about how impeaching Trump — in a move that would by entirely symbolic, insofar as the Republican-held Senate would never convict and remove him from office — could improve his odds of reelection. Less-discussed is the very good chance that it would cost Democrats control of the House.
Thirty-one Democrats from districts Trump carried in 2016 currently sit in the House. Moving forward with impeachment would force an incredibly difficult vote on all of those Democrats, including the 13 from districts Trump won by more than six percentage points. Democrats currently have 235 House seats. Republicans currently have 197 seats, with two vacancies in GOP-leaning districts in North Carolina. If the GOP keeps those two seats, it would need to flip 19 seats in 2020 to retake control of the lower chamber.
Pro-impeachment Democrats were thrilled that 95 House members voted for the recent impeachment resolution offered by Representative Al Green of Texas. But that vote revealed that purple-district Democrats have no appetite for impeachment. While it’s possible that the revelations in the Mueller report or the president’s other flaws have reduced Trump’s level of support in the 31 Democrat-held House districts he won, not a single one of the 31 Democrats in question voted for Green’s resolution, and not a single one has publicly supported impeachment so far. That suggests Trump is probably still pretty popular in their districts — or at least that they remain wary of rocking the boat.
If all 31 Democrats in Trump districts voted no and every other Democrat voted yes, impeachment would fail with just 205 votes, 13 short of the 218 needed. (For the sake of this math, assume that there are no vacancies or members voting “present” on such a consequential matter, and that every Republican votes no, as all indications are they would.) Democratic leaders could allow 18 members to vote “no” and pass impeachment by a single vote, but that would leave 13 of their colleagues voting to impeach Trump from districts he carried in 2016. Winning those seats would put Republicans at 212, just six short of what they need to flip the House. (Representative Justin Amash, who recently left the GOP and supports impeachment, intends to run for reelection as an independent. This math assumes that Amash is not defeated by a GOP challenger in 2020. His district scores R+6 in the Cook Partisan Voting Index, and Trump carried it by ten points in 2016.)
